I once went to Starbucks
and the woman behind the cashier asked me
if I drew on my freckles

Like I would paint thousands of brown specks
to spite the face
my mother gave me

Alas my flaws tattoo my skin
like a birthmark that spreads
over my lips and my cheeks and my nose

But I did not leave that Starbucks offended
as it was a reminder that what I consider disfiguring
is someone else’s idea of beauty.
